Grab your favorite art medium and join Virtual NYC Urban Sketchers as we immerse ourselves in the rich heritage of the
Native American Pow Wow!
Feel the
drum beat. Hear the singing. See the
colors. Admire the the regalia the dancers wear, the skilled footwork and precise movements. These are Native American powwows.
There is great pageantry to pow wows with exquisitely constructed regalia that is handmade and includes feathers, shells, bones, beadwork and sometimes family heirlooms. Everything on the regalia usually has significance to the dancer. Seeing the regalia- including the bustles and headdresses- up close, you can see the intricacies and craftsmanship that goes into each piece, a pattern that makes the colors flash and swirl when the dancer begins to move.
Native American Indian’s gather together, to join in dancing, singing, feasting, visiting, renewing old friendships and making new ones. An incredible way to truly experience the traditions of the past as the American Native Indian’s blend traditions of the present and the past.
Today, Pow Wows are a place where both Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples can come together in peace to celebrate tradition and promote an enduring culture. There are thousands of Pow Wows held across North American. They are held in all 50 states and all Canadian provinces.
